Nene Ambani Movie Review

Release date: 17 December 2010
Director : Rajesh.M
Music Director : Yuvan Shankar Raja
Producers : Sivasri Sreenivasan
Starring : Arya, Nayantara and others

If you've seen SMS (Siva Manasala Sakthi), director Rajesh's previous film, you'd get a fairly clear idea and know what to expect from Nene Ambani which has been dubbed from Boss Engira Baskaran. In the latter the director adds lot more romance and depends on his screenplay to dish out a romantic comedy. The movie could have done well in Tamil but the dubbed version is excruciatingly slow and it's doubtful if the Telugu audiences would relate to the multiple conflicting goals of the protagonist.

It is a fairly simple plot about an idle man who hasn't cleared his exams, termed useless by his folks falls in love with his sister-in-law's sister. When the family rejects the alliance he vows to earn respect, money like Ambani and marry the girl in six months.

Sounds simple, but it tests one's patience going along with the hero and see him surmount his problems layer after layer. Also it seems strange that in the contemporary society, a well-educated woman insists on marrying a vagabond for no reason at all and convincing him that the onus is on her to take care of him throughout her life. That she has fallen for him is also not convincingly portrayed as Nayanthara keeps smiling at him from the word go. All she does is cast coy glances and walk past him in long flowing gowns while he dances to badly choreographed duets.

The film begins with Arya running behind someone with a sickle and towards the end of the story, the scene is brought back explaining why he did that and showing whose blood he way baying for. Since it is a dubbed film the dialogues have to be written keeping the tastes of the Telugu cinegoers in view but the filmmaker stretches his interest and creativity a bit further, he shows the huge hoardings written in Tamil and calls it Telugu, shows Chennai and terms it Rajahmundry, and incorporates Telugu film dialogues just to replace Tamil.

The humour ends up being insipid and morose and there are hardly any sparks between the lead pair. Arya's luke-warm performance is one of the film's few positive attributes, while Santhanam makes for a convincing comedian (although he occasionally steps over the line into smugness). You can sleep through the film, still guess what's about to happen after waking up.
